Hole No. 6 at Crooked Stick Golf Club

Crooked Sticked was Pete Dye's first great golf course design, built in the mid-1960s on flat Indiana farmland that Dye transformed into a links blend pattered after the designs of Alister Mackenzie, Donald Ross and C.B. MacDonald. The course features wide fairways with fair landing areas and demanding approach shots. Construction of the frist nine was completed in 1965, with the back nine completed two years later. No consecutive holes are laid out in the same direction and golfers must constantly adjust to wind from a different tack. Long holes are followed by short holes, anhd shots calling for right-to-left flight are followed by shots requiring a left-to-right path. The course is designed to test a player's "poise, courage and intelligence" as well as his or her skill.

Note: The following par/yardage information is based on the club's Black Tee yardages. Official BMW Championship par and yardages have not yet been released.

Hole Par Yards
1 4 358

On this fair opening hole, favor the left side of the fairway to avoid the tall trees on the right. A long iron or fairway wood from the tee will leave players with a short iron to this small green that is well protected by bunkers in the front left and back right.

2 4 442

On this sharp dogleg left, tee shots should favor the right side to avoid the large fairway bunker on the left. A mid- to short-iron approach to this well-protected green can lead to birdie, but missing the green leaves a tough up and down.

3 3 200

Hole location determines how to play this par 3. When the hole is back, club selection is extremely important. However, a player can be more aggressive with a front or middle hole location. If he misses the green and finds the pot bunker on the left, he's almost certainly facing a bogey.

4 4 469

This monster par 4 is not only long, but also plays into the prevailing wind. The approach shot must carry onto the green, so take plenty of club.

5 5 621

Typically a three-shot hole, the first par 5 is the toughest. After playing driver off the tee, players should pay attention to the fairway bunkers that come into play on the second shot. A short-iron approach to this reasonably flat green must avoid the deep bunker on the front and left side of the green.

6 3 201

On this par 3, there is no place to bail out. The intimidating tee shot must carry the water hazard that guards the front and right sides of the green. A pot bunker and railroad pilings protect the green's left side.

7 4 454

Finding the fairway is especially important on this hole. Players should aim to the center of this subtle, tricky, elevated green. A par is well-earned on this hole.

8 4 456

This par 4 is one of the greatest holes at Crooked Stick. The water on the left is in play on both the drive and approach. The tee shot bail-out area on the right comes in handy but makes the approach even more demanding.

9 5 530

This par 5 is a great risk-reward hole. A drive that avoids the creek and bunker on the left gives long hitters the chance to reach in two. The real difficulty is avoiding the deep bunkers right and left that guard this very undulating green.

10 4 457

The lake on the right side makes the tee shot on this long par 4 even more difficult. A long-iron approach must be carefully placed on this undulating green. A player can bail out to the left of the green, but go anywhere else and he'll face a tough up-and-down.

11 5 556

On this par 5, a player must be aware of driving through the dogleg as the fairway kicks to the right at the corner. Favor the left side of the fairway on the second shot. The green slopes severely from back left to front right, so approach shots should be played a bit left of center.

12 4 424

There is much more room on the left side of the tee shot landing area than a player can see. If he misses right, he'll end up in a massive valley. Keep the approach shot below the hole. There is a bail-out area to the right of the green.

13 3 182

This picturesque par 3 plays slightly downhill to a very severe green. Club selection is everything. The back of the green slopes away from the tee, so when the hole location is in the back, players should aim to the middle of the green and let the slope funnel the ball to the hole.

14 4 483

This long, sharp dogleg-left par 4 is another risk-reward hole. A tee shot down the center of the fairway leaves an extremely long second, but a strong drive that carries the creek on the left leaves a player with a short-iron approach.

15 5 523

Players should avoid the fairway bunker on this par 5 to improve their scoring chances. The green is more than 50 yards deep. If the hole location is in front, it is reachable in two. When the flagstick is back, players must carry the deep bunker protecting the green's left side.

16 4 489

On this long par 4, the tee shot is best played as close to the bunker on the right as a player dares. Then, he'll face a downhill approach to a green well protected by water on the right. Putting on the three-tiered green is challenging.

17 3 214

Hybrid or fairway wood is recommended to find the large, very undulating green on this par 3. If a player misses the green to the left and finds the bunker, he'll face a troublesome up and down.

18 4 457

This is one of the best par-4 finishing holes in golf. Tee shots must avoid both the lake guarding the entire right side and the deep valley to the left. The large, undulating green, framed by three pot bunkers, is classic Pete Dye.
