SYNOPSIS
 Royal Liverpool, which returned to the Open Championship rota for the first time since 1967, may have represented unfamiliar territory. But the outcome was anything but as Tiger Woods beat Chris DiMarco by two strokes to win his 11th major. The game's No. 1 player, who had lost his beloved father earlier in the year, then broke down in tears in a raw display of emotion for a man more accustomed to celebrating with an uppercut of a fist pump. Otherwise, Woods hung tough the entire week. He was one stroke off the pace after the first round, but gained the lead with a 65 on Friday and maintained it despite a 71 in the third. He then matched Sunday's best score of 67 to dispatch DiMarco, whom he had also beaten the previous year at the Masters. "After the last putt, I realized that my dad is never going to see this again," Woods said. "I wish he could have seen this one last time. I tried hard at Augusta but it didn't quite happen. He was out here today keeping me calm. ¦ I love my dad and I miss him so much. To win my first tournament after my dad passed away, and for it for be a major championship, it makes it that much more special."
