Born in Sweden, family emigrated to Queensland, Australia, when he was 11 and he learned to play golf there.
Turned professional at age 18 and played on Australian, European and Japanese Tours prior to PGA TOUR.
Credited move to Jacksonville, FL, area in Nov. 1998 with helping improve his game as he could practice with neighbors David Duval, Fred Funk and Vijay Singh.
