EXPERT PREVIEW: PGA TOUR NETWORK on-site correspondent Mark Carnevale previews Sunday's final round

Who could have imagined the great weather we would have after the rain early this week and over the last few weeks on the Monterey Peninsula? Payers have raved about the condition of the courses, the addition of Monterey Peninsula Country Club and of the reduction in the number of players in the field. It has certainly made it more enjoyable, if that is possible.
Dustin Johnson's length off the tee should be a big advantage in the final round, and he is obviously comfortable playing this course as he shot 64 in Round 1 at Pebble Beach.

Paul Goydos is an interesting co-leader after 54 holes. Here is a player who never has played particularly well at this tournament until this week. I look back two weeks ago, when Paul was not sure he would play at last week's Northern Trust Open, but when Ryder Cup Captain, Corey Pavin let Paul know he was picking him as an assistant captain, Paul officially committed to play in LA.
Paul went on to a top-five finish there, and it has carried over to this week. Who knows, if Paul happens to win today, he may have to make a call back to Corey saying he would have to regretfully decline his appointment, telling Corey, "Captain, I have made the team!"
Maybe wishful thinking, but certainly not out of the question. One other think to look at is whether or not the PGA TOUR will play the ball down in the final round. If they do, it could have a bearing on who goes onto win.
INSTRUCTOR'S CORNER: Steve Voguit, head instructor at the TOUR Academy at World Golf Village, analyzes the playing conditions this week.
After the completion of Round 3, defending champion, Dustin Johnson posted his second round of 64 and is most definitely proving to be a force to be reckoned with on the PGA TOUR.
As predicted, the weather this entire week has not been an issue, and as a result, we are seeing some very impressive statistics with regards to fairways hit and greens in regulation amongst all. If a player is looking to provide a challenge to leaders Johnson and Paul Goydos, they are going to have to get it done on the greens.
Both Johnson and Goydos's putting statistics for the tournament are averaging less than 1.6 putts per round. Compare this to the rest of the field's 1.786 putts per green, and we can see a very clear explanation of the leaderboard.
All TOUR players excel on the putting greens in general. To answer why this is, watch a TOUR player grip a driver and then that same player grip a putter. Most PGA TOUR players make an effort to grip the putter in the palms of their hands. What this achieves is aligning both forearms with the putter shaft, thus assisting in both direction and distance control. Watch the players on the greens today and keep an eye on how their forearms and putter shaft share the same angle.
